Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes DuMez
Du Mez has compiled a stellar analysis and timeline of the disturbing attitudes and stances at the center of the marriage of Evangelicalism and the Republican Party. While I knew a good bit of the key components going in, Du Mez still managed to surprise me with a sometimes overwhelming view of the complete and total picture. I do think it went a little long — and got a bit repetitive, but honestly that's probably a result of the structure itself she's discussing rather than due to repetition in her writing structure. It's heavy, it's frustrating, and it is by no means done.
Audiobook, as narrated by Suzie Althens: While Althens did a great job — there were times when I felt her voice, while perfectly suited to narration, did veer into the droning range television anchors and reporters can inhabit. And it wasn't not like some of the AI voices with which we've grown accustomed. Still, otherwise perfectly fine.
